How much difference has a year made?

I recently read an article which gave me a serious "ah-hah" moment. The author suggested that if you look at a picture of the average herd of treadmill and stationary bike junkies at your local gym, and then look at a another picture of the same crowd a year earlier, chances are you won't see much difference! This immediately struck me as absolutely true. You see so many people who consistently "work out" without ever getting any significant results. Why is this?

It is because they are working out, they aren't training. They have no goal and no intermediate objectives. They have nothing towards which they are pushing themselves. They are just "putting in their time." As a result, they never threaten the homeostasis of their bodies, which long ago adapted to doing 4 hours a week at 5 mph on the treadmill.

If you want a different result, you need a different method. If you have been doing the same thing for months and aren't happy with your progress, that's why. So switch things up a bit. Set a goal for something you aren't able to do right now and try to achieve it. Run longer or faster than you can right now. Increase your personal best on a strength training exercise. Learn a new skill entirely. Then, once you have acheived that goal, move on to the next one. Don't work out anymore! Train!!!
